The Year of the Change of the Earth (2021)
Apple TV Plus
Nature heals. No, really – it’s not about those ironic memes of crocodiles from the beginning of 2020. floating on noodles in the pool or cats riding a luggage carousel. When humans withdrew from cities, parks, oceans and many other places during the blockade of COVID in 2020, nature took this into account and all kinds of creatures benefited. The year of the change of the Earth, narrated by the legendary David Attenborough, shows that we owe it to whales, penguins, cheetahs and a bunch of other animals to interfere less in their lives.
Finch (2021)
Apple TV Plus
You can read our full review of Finch here, but in short: We liked it! He is often overly sentimental, with a few annoying “life lessons”, but this post-apocalyptic tale of a lone survivor and a robot on his last journey has a real charm and is worth watching.
Wolfwalkers (2020)
Apple TV Plus
A dazzling animated film by the team behind the songs of the sea, this is the third part of Tom Moore’s loosely connected “Irish Folklore Trilogy”. This is perhaps one of the best animated films of 2020, which fully deserves an Oscar nomination against the giants of Disney and Pixar. Completely mesmerizing.
Billy Isle: The world is a little blurry (2021)
This raw documentary behind the music gives you a closer look at the life of singer and songwriter Billy Isle, from her breakthrough hit Ocean Eyes to the James Bond theme recording No Time to Die. In the candid film, Ailish faces the pressure of touring, making music videos and writing and recording her hit album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?
The Banker (2020)
Apple TV
It’s a bit light on the subject, but The Banker, a biographical film about Bernard Garrett – an enterprising black business owner who hired a white man to be the face of his company to circumvent racist attitudes – is worth watching.
Palmer (2021)
Apple TV Plus
It’s easy to forget that Justin Timberlake is a complete actor, but Palmer will absolutely remind you of that fact. In the role of a former prisoner who stumbled into the life of a young boy, Palmer is hardly innovative, but is carried by the central performance of Timberlake. Get ready for tears.
Fathers (2019)
Apple
A fantastically made documentary by Bryce Dallas Howard about what it’s like to be a dad in those days. Impressive, well produced. Mandatory care, especially for parents.
Here we are: Notes on life on planet Earth (2020)
Apple TV
It’s more of an animated short than a movie, but given the theme (and the fact that Apple TV Plus doesn’t have that many movies), we’re adding it. Here we are: Notes on life on planet Earth is magnificent, heartwarming and ideal for families with young children.
Greyhound (2020)
Apple TV Plus
Starring Tom Hanks as commander of the US Navy, Greyhound was well received after its release and – unlike most modern films – is offered in a weak 90-minute run time. An intense, well-played, produced and Oscar-winning film, Greyhound is perhaps one of the best films available on Apple TV Plus.
On the Rocks (2020)
Apple TV Plus
On The Rocks returns Sofia Coppola with Bill Murray for the first time since A Very Murray Christmas. In essence, this is a drama about a father and daughter. It’s a little easier than Coppola’s usual job, but it seems to match Murray, whose charming, world-weary performance elevates the entire project.
Beastie Boys Story (2020)
Apple
Fight for your right to party with Beastie Boys Mike Diamond (Mike D) and Adam Horovitz (Ad-Rock) as they tell the story of their music and 40 years of friendship with the late Adam Yauch (MCA). This “live documentary documentary” was directed by their longtime collaborator Spike Jones as appropriate evidence for these rap legends.
Hall (2019)
Apple
The story of coming of age Hala tells a memorable story of the struggle for identity formation as a teenager balances her Muslim upbringing with her social life and the identity of a high school student.
