Atmosphere, creativity and philosophical ideas are just some of the elements you can expect from HBO Max’s selection of science fiction movies. In addition to the latest blockbusters and indie gems, HBO Max is full of science fiction classics. This is one of the best selections out there – at least more impressive than Netflix and Amazon Prime Video combined.
Of course it is missing in many other areas (the free trial is dead in the ground), but at least her sci-fi proposals are zero. Scroll down for the best of the HBO Max band.
The Matrix (1999)
Warner Bros. Pictures
If you haven’t watched The Matrix and somehow don’t know its main plot points, well done for avoiding spoilers for 23 years. The Matrix Reloaded and Matrix Revolutions sequels are also on HBO Max.
Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
Watch a two-and-a-half-hour atmospheric, lavish show, but don’t expect any conclusions on the question posed by the original Blade Runner: Is Rick Deckard a replicant?
Blade Runner (1982)
Forever the pinnacle of neo-noir visual art, Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner will never be lost in time, like tears in the rain.
Principle (2020)
Warner Bros.
Love him or hate him – take him or find his “science” confusing – Tenet is fun that catches the eye. Best advice: Do not question Tenet, obey the experience of Tenet.
Ready Player One (2018)
Yap Buytendeik
Based on the popular novel by Ernest Klein of the same name, Ready Player One is a holiday for maniacs that contains over 100 references to popular culture from different time periods, including Minecraft, Batman and Back to the Future. There is even a story about a dystopian society that finds solace in virtual reality.
Home (2010)
Warner Bros.
Christopher Nolan’s best film on this list.
Soylent Green (1973)
Video screenshot by Amanda Kooser / CNET
A dystopian thriller starring Charlton Heston and the action of 2022, tormented by overcrowding, pollution and climate catastrophe. This is not a documentary.
2001: Space Odyssey (1968)
MGM
“Alexa, play 2001: A Space Odyssey.”
Horizon of Events (1997)
Paramount Pictures
A good bad movie that brings supernatural horror into space. A crew of astronauts set out to search for a missing spaceship and find malicious forces at play.
Gravity (2013)
Gravity is the best scary and shocking space movie involving a total of zero aliens. Next up is Sandra Bullock’s Dr. Ryan Stone, an astronaut stranded in space as she tries to return to Earth at first glance.
Memories (2021)
Warner Bros. Pictures
This sci-fi mystery from half of the duo created by Westworld (Lisa Joy) is mind-boggling, but the interesting ideas are worth considering. Reminiscence follows Nick Bannister from Hugh Jackman, who uses a machine that can see people’s memories.
The day after tomorrow (2004)
Twentieth century fox
Roland Emmerich, “Master of Disaster”, presents The Day After Tomorrow. The director also made this year’s Moonfall, in which the Moon falls from its orbit in a collision with the Earth. You already know how fun this movie will be.
Independence Day (1996)
Oh, look, this is another Roland Emmerich movie! This follows the Earth Resistance Soldiers fighting an alien attack, an event they record on the July 4th calendar.
The Butterfly Effect (2004)
New Line Cinema
A nice B-movie, The Butterfly Effect, sees student Evan Treborn (Ashton Kutcher) deal with the past and discover how every change affects the present.
Stalker (1979)
Goskino
Experience the slow start of Stalker and you will be able to say that you have watched an existential masterpiece of Russian cinema.
Oblivion (2013)
Oblivion came out of the science fiction workshop. Starring Tom Cruise, he follows people at war with aliens, honoring science fiction films from the 70’s, including The Omega Man and Silent Running. A love letter in the form of a semi-decent science fiction action adventure.
A Guide to the Hitchhiker’s Galaxy (2005)
Pictures of Buena Vista
Science fiction comedy isn’t always successful, and this adaptation by Douglas Adams will either be weird in a good way if you’re familiar with the source material, or weird in a ridiculous, confusing way. My 13 year old I loved it.
Solaris (1972)
Mosfilm
Before Stalker, Andrei Tarkovsky made great strides in science fiction with his complex, hero-driven article about astronauts who have wild hallucinations that may or may not be real. The American remake of Solaris from 2002 is also on HBO Max, with added romance by George Clooney.
Mr. Nobody (2009)
Mr. Nobody is the ending film, leaving you in a thoughtful note to ponder. It is useful to know that this is a story that explores the consequences of the choice and why you should not worry about making the perfect one.
Cloverfield (2008)
Paramount Pictures
Matt Reeves has been doing great things since directing this slippery, monstrous bite of footage. See what he did before the movies “Planet of the Apes” and “Batman” from 2022.
Me, the Robot (2004)
Routine blockbuster for reliable entertainment.
The Running Man (1987)
Tri-Star Pictures
It wouldn’t be the best sci-fi list without Arnie’s many films. Running Man focuses on a game show in which criminals must try to escape from professional assassins.
Scanners (1981)
1981
A warning to people who don’t like horror before they start playing this David Cronenberg science fiction. The scanners track people with special abilities, including telepathic and telekinetic abilities. Not the first on this list to become a cult classic after a lukewarm initial reaction, Scanners left a lasting impression, not least because of a memorable scene involving a head bang.
Faculty (1998)
Miramax Films
Robert Rodriguez is not the most popular Star Wars fan right now, mainly because he makes a hero spin like a ballerina in the split-final book The Book of Bob Fett. The faculty, directed by Rodriguez, isn’t great, but it’s not bad either, following teenagers investigating mysterious events in their high school.
Monsters (2010)
Dizziness movies
This solid British science fiction comes from Gareth Edwards, who went on to direct Rogue One: A History of Star Wars and Godzilla in 2014. His mastery of atmosphere, wonder and beauty is shown here, all on a small budget. Monsters follows a couple trying to cross an Infected Zone crowded with giant tentacled monsters.
Super 8 (2011)
Paramount Pictures
Basically, Stranger Things developed in the 70’s. Super 8 follows a group of teenagers who make their own movie when a train derails and a dangerous presence begins to lurk in their city.
