An explosive package sent to Northeastern University in Boston on Tuesday included a scrawled note criticizing Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and virtual reality developers, CNN reported Wednesday. An employee suffered minor injuries to his arm after the package detonated, according to police.
The package did not include an explosive device, NBC10 Boston notes. It was apparently a Pelican pressurized case, a type of protective container typically used to store delicate technical equipment.
A second package was found and recovered by the Boston Police Department’s bomb squad. The campus reopened Wednesday morning, the university said in a message to staff and students.
The explosion happened in Northeastern’s Holmes Hall, which houses the virtual reality center, and came a month before Meta Connect, a VR conference hosted by Facebook’s parent company Meta. The next version of Meta’s VR headset, known as Project Cambriawill be unveiled at the event and is expected to be released in October.
Boston police did not immediately respond to a request for further comment.
