It looks like Microsoft is still working on real 3D emojis for Windows after first annoying it last year and then only delivering 2D versions of Windows 11. Nando Costa, a prominent designer at Microsoft, recently revealed that the company is still working on creating of emoji for windows 11 watch more 3D.
On Friday, Costa authored a blog post about Microsoft’s new direction for its emoji system, detailing the company’s drive for 3D after the hackathon in 2020. In response to a tweet from someone who wants 3D emoji in Windows 11, Costa says: “We are working on that”, With a grinning face with sweat emojis. We still don’t know when 3D emojis will appear in Windows 11, but at least Microsoft is still working on reviving its original vision.
While Microsoft unveiled impressive 3D emojis and promised to be part of Windows 11, the company surprisingly returned to 2D flat design without explanation. Probably because the flatter 2D design works better in many applications. There may also be some technical limitations in Windows that Microsoft must work through before 3D emojis become a reality.
Costa’s blog also details how Microsoft chose to reflect human qualities such as wrinkles and hairstyles in its emojis, how the team makes these emojis appear in applications such as Microsoft Teams, and how some of its custom designs are inspired by the “new reality of the hybrid.” Microsoft uses tools such as Adobe Illustrator, Maxon’s Cinema 4D, Figma, Font Lab and more to create its own 3D emojis.
