What’s up?
Diablo 4 is bigger and darker than previous games, a much-needed upgrade to its dungeon crawling formula.
The sanctuary is divided into large regions, which are then divided into smaller areas. Zones typically have open areas filled with monsters, as well as various towns and camps where players can interact with merchants or find side quests.
The missions in the game are plentiful and will send you to the far reaches of Sanctuary. Some will require killing a number of enemies in the wild, while others are focused on taking down bosses found in dungeons.
Dungeons are scattered throughout the regions, some of which take a few minutes to clear, while others can take up to 15 minutes or more. There are also landmarks to discover and world events that will send waves of terrifying enemies your way.
Diablo 4 is not only bigger, but also has a much darker feel than previous games in the series. Time and time again I was freaked out by the events unfolding in the game. Blizzard pushed the boundaries of villainy by introducing Lilith, who lures people to let their inner demons out and do terrible things. The visual effects in Diablo 4 help elevate the darker tone with cinematic sequences that zoom in on the characters to give a close-up view of the horror rather than the distant perspective used throughout the game.
As remarkable as Diablo 4 is, the review build I experienced had some issues that could frustrate players. I used Necromancer during my playthrough. It was great to have a gang of skeletons at my disposal, but they tended to attack non-damaging targets like a destructible wall while ignoring the boss I was fighting. Targeting itself can be a bit clunky, especially from a distance, as auto-targeting doesn’t always pick the perfect enemy to attack. Some of my minions also just stood there instead of attacking, but that was a rare occurrence.
Probably the most disappointing aspect of the game was the lack of a primary attack button. For some reason, Blizzard thought it would be better for players to use a skill as their default attack. This means that if I have a fancy sword or a giant scythe — I’m playing a Necromancer after all — the default attack will be whatever initial skill I choose instead of swinging my equipped weapon. This made having a cool weapon somewhat useless, which is almost sacrilege for a game like Diablo where the ultimate goal is to have the best equipped character.
Diablo 4 does a lot of things right to elevate the series. It offers plenty of content to keep players busy for long periods of time, but doesn’t make it pointless. The game also goes back to the dark tone of the original game, but amps it up for a modern audience.
